This daylighting study was done to look at light penetration into the interior of this new campus student center. The 3-D computer model was rendered in Lightscape.

In the design development phase of this project the architect (Rem Koolhaas) was concerned that the center of this one-story building would be much darker than the perimeter, and in fact, the study illustrated that very well. The image to the left is a view of a very simple floor plan with the roof turned off. The light areas show how direct sun and reflected light penetrate the building at noon on December 21. The area in question is the dark gray triangular space in the center of the plan. Seeing this graphic representation helped to inform the architect's decision to add skylights to bring more natural light into that space.

Above is the computer model used to generate the rendering. While the geometry of the building is complex, the model itself is made of simple surfaces. The large tube on top is a station for the commuter train that runs over the top of the building.
