Daylighting and electric lighting model studies of the central atrium of a new science building for a private university were done during the construction documents phase. The 3-D computer model was rendered using Lightscape.

The image to the left is a rendering of the space at noon on June 21. This study was done to determine if a ceramic frit pattern on the skylight glass was desirable. The material of the skylight is partially opaque to simulate the frit. It was determined that the frit was indeed necessary to reduce direct sun. The electric light balances the light levels in the corridors next to the atrium.

This image is a rendering of the space at night with electric light only. Notice how much brighter the lights seem, even though they are actually no brighter than in the image above.  This is because without all of the sunlight streaming in, there is more contrast between the dark sky and the light interior. The frit helps to reflect some of that electric light back down and reduces the contrast, again helping to balance light levels.
