CHPS Daylighting
CHPS stands for the Collaborative for High Performance Schools. We are able to provide calculations documenting compliance with each of the many versions of CHPS daylighting credits (using SPOT or Lightscape software). Ideally, we would be involved in the design process at an early stage in order to provide advice and assistance during design development to ensure compliance requirements are met.

There are seven states or regions in the US that have adopted the CHPS daylighting protocol and several more are in the process of adopting CHPS. Each state has its own variation on the calculations required for verification of daylighting. California provides three compliance options (single point in time, daylight saturation, and daylight factor). Both Colorado and Massachusetts provide two options (multiple point in time and daylight autonomy). Texas requires a single point in time computer model, while New York specifies the daylight autonomy method and requires SPOT software for verification (see image at left). Washington state asks for daylight factor calculations, but allows this to be verified with either a computer or physical model. The Northeast Region (Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont) requires that electric light be replaced with daylight but is somewhat flexible on how that is documented.
The CHPS daylighting criteria are designed to encourage daylighting optimization with the local climate conditions. All of the protocols also require that direct sun be eliminated from teaching and work surfaces and most have requirements for automatic lighting controls in order to receive the daylighting credits.
